Our Crystal Quality Standards
Two bracelets can be made from the same natural crystal, yet have very different material values.
The difference often comes down to the quality of the crystal beads themselves. Color, clarity, natural inclusions, and distinctive mineral features can all influence their market value. A less expensive crystal isn't necessarily fake or defective—it may simply have different characteristics.
At JING Balance, we carefully select our crystal beads based on the qualities that matter most for each material, rather than relying solely on supplier grade labels.
Here's what we look for and how we evaluate the crystals used in our bracelets.
How We Evaluate Crystal Quality
Not all crystals are valued for the same characteristics. While color and clarity matter for some, others are distinguished by their natural inclusions, optical effects, or mineral texture.
At JING Balance, we evaluate each crystal according to its material characteristics, focusing on the features that contribute to its quality and market value.
1. Quartz Family
Clear Quartz, Amethyst, Citrine, Rose Quartz & Smoky Quartz
- Color Quality: The color's purity, saturation, and overall appearance, evaluated according to the specific quartz variety.
- Clarity: The crystal's transparency and the presence of cloudiness, fractures, or other visible inclusions.
Green Phantom Quartz & White Phantom Quartz
- Phantom Formation: The definition, layering, and visual appearance of the phantom inclusions.
- Clarity: The transparency of the surrounding quartz and the amount of cloudiness or other distracting inclusions.
Golden Rutilated Quartz & Black Rutilated Quartz
- Inclusion Quality: The visibility, density, arrangement, and overall appearance of the needle-like inclusions.
- Clarity: The transparency and clarity of the surrounding quartz.
Tiger's Eye
Yellow Tiger's Eye & Blue Tiger's Eye
- Color Quality: The richness and appearance of the natural golden-brown coloration.
- Chatoyancy: The clarity, intensity, and movement of the reflective cat's-eye band.
2. Chalcedony Family
Carnelian, White Agate,Yellow Agate & Black Onyx
Chalcedony is valued for its color and smooth, often translucent appearance.
- Color Quality: The purity, richness, and consistency of the color, evaluated according to each variety.
- Translucency: How light passes through the material, revealing its internal appearance.
3. Feldspar Family
Feldspar gemstones are especially valued for their distinctive optical effects.
Sunstone & Gray Moonstone
Feldspar gemstones are known for their distinctive optical effects, which contribute to their appearance and value.
- Color Quality: The richness, tone, and overall appearance of the stone's natural bodycolor.
- Optical Effect: The visibility, intensity, and movement of the gemstone's characteristic shimmer, whether the sparkling reflections of Sunstone or the floating sheen of Moonstone.
4. Other Gem Materials
Other gemstones have different mineral compositions, but some share similar characteristics that can be evaluated using the same criteria.
Beryl, Prehnite & Kyanite
Aquamarine, Prehnite & Blue Kyanite
- Color Quality: The richness, purity, and overall appearance of the stone's natural color.
- Clarity & Translucency: The visibility of internal inclusions, cloudiness, and how clearly light passes through the material.
Rhodonite, Lapis Lazuli, Rhodochrosite & Mica
Rhodonite, Lapis Lazuli, Rhodochrosite & Lepidolite
- Color Saturation: The richness and intensity of the stone's primary color.
- Color Coverage: The proportion of the stone showing its primary color compared with other naturally occurring colors or mineral regions.
Tourmaline, Obsidian, Pyrite & Howlite
Black Tourmaline, Black Obsidian, Pyrite & Howlite
For these materials, the quality of the finished beads is evaluated primarily through their polishing and surface condition, rather than transparency or color saturation.
- Polish Quality: The smoothness and consistency of the polished surface, evaluated according to each material's natural luster.
- Surface Integrity: The absence of significant chips, open fractures, surface damage, or poorly finished drill holes.
Natural patterns and mineral characteristics are not considered defects unless they affect the bead's structural integrity.
Our Crystal Bead Standards
Beyond the natural characteristics of each gemstone, we also pay attention to the quality and consistency of the finished beads used in our bracelets.
-
Material Authenticity
We carefully select our suppliers and source verified natural gemstones to ensure the authenticity of the crystal beads used in every JING Balance bracelet.
-
Surface Finish
Beads are evaluated for smooth, even polishing, with attention to visible scratches, rough surfaces, and poorly finished drill holes.
-
Structural Integrity
We look for beads free from significant chips, surface damage, or fractures that could compromise their durability.
Natural inclusions and internal patterns are not automatically considered defects. Learn more about the difference in our Common Crystal Imperfections guide. -
Bead Consistency
We consider bead size, color, finish, and overall visual balance to create a cohesive appearance within each bracelet.
How JING Balance Selects Its Crystals
At JING Balance, crystal selection goes beyond supplier grade labels. We focus on the actual characteristics of each material, choosing beads for their color, clarity, natural features, and overall appearance.
Carefully Selected Materials
Different gemstones have different qualities worth looking for. We consider these characteristics when selecting our materials, rather than treating all crystals according to a single grading standard.
Balanced Bead Selection
A bracelet is more than a collection of individual stones. We also consider how the beads work together, selecting for visual consistency while preserving the natural variations that make each crystal unique.
Purposeful Crystal Pairings
Material quality is one part of our approach. Each JING Balance bracelet is also designed around a specific real-life need, combining crystals with complementary energy roles.
By bringing together carefully selected natural gemstones and thoughtful crystal pairings, we create bracelets that reflect both material quality and purposeful design.
FAQs
Are AAA, 5A, or 7A crystal grades reliable?
These are commercial grading labels, not a universally standardized system. Their definitions can vary between suppliers.
At JING Balance, we focus on the actual characteristics of each gemstone rather than relying on grade labels alone.
Do natural inclusions mean a crystal is lower quality?
Not necessarily. Some inclusions reduce clarity, while others are defining features of the gemstone, such as the golden needles in Rutilated Quartz or the layered formations in Phantom Quartz.
What matters depends on the type of crystal and the nature of its inclusions.
Are more expensive crystals always higher quality?
Not always. Crystal prices depend on several factors, including color, clarity, size, rarity, treatments, and market demand.
A more expensive crystal may have characteristics that command a higher market price, but that doesn't automatically make a less expensive crystal defective or unsuitable.
